Roman Polanski has gotten support from some heavy hitters in Hollywood in response to his arrest in Zurich on 30 year old charges of sexual assault. The award winning director has garnered support from some of the most influential people in show business, but its still too early to tell if it will help.
Christoph Blocher stated that the 76 year old film iconoclast should have been warned before his arrest in Zurich. While Blocher agrees that Swiss law was not broken, because the case is clear cut, he also states that the “whole mess could have been avoided” if Polanski was given a warning letter before entering Switzerland for the award ceremony he was to be lauded at.
Roman Polanski has agreed to pay Samantha Geimer a $500,000 settlement stemming from the 30 year charges of sexual assault to halt the legal assault against him. It’s unknown if this agreement was actually enacted, though the LA Times hunts for some answers…
For the acclaimed director of 76 years old, a film festival in Zurich was anything but the award ceremony he was anticipating. US officials took Polanski into custody related to a sex charge from the 1970s. Roman Polanski was in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award from the Swiss film community.
One of the things the makes the arrest of Roman Polanski so regrettable is the fact that it has nothing to do with the ‘victim’ of his crime. Samantha Geimer has publicly stated that she never wanted to file charges against Polanski and wants the charges dropped. The Los Angeles DA has other ideas though and they have nothing to do with the will of the parties involved.
